Check your Entra Connect Sync version before Microsoft’s 2026 cut-off

Microsoft has set a September 2026 cut-off for older Entra Connect Sync versions. This article explains which versions are affected, why Kocho recommends moving beyond Microsoft’s minimum requirement, and how to confirm your current install.

Microsoft has reminded organisations to check their Microsoft Entra Connect Sync version before 30 September 2026. Versions below 2.5.79.0 (released on 1st September 2025) will stop working after that date, but Kocho recommends moving to 2.6.1.0 to avoid any issues with the minimum supported release.

For most organisations, this should be a straightforward validation exercise rather than a cause for concern. Microsoft enabled automatic upgrades for Entra Connect several years ago, so many environments may already be on a supported version. The important point is to confirm the installed version and plan an update if it is earlier than 2.6.1.0.

However, automatic upgrades do not always complete successfully in every scenario. If your organisation opted out of automatic upgrades, blocked the process, or has not recently checked the installed version, it is worth confirming the current state directly on the server.

Microsoft Entra Connect Sync keeps on-premises Active Directory and Microsoft 365 identities in sync, so users have a consistent account across both environments.

How to check the installed version

The easiest way to check the version is to do it manually on the server where Microsoft Entra Connect Sync is installed.

Go to:

Settings and Features

Find Microsoft Entra Connect Sync in the application list and check the version displayed.

Microsoft’s minimum version for the September 2026 deadline is 2.5.79.0 or later, but Kocho recommends upgrading to 2.6.1.0 because of known issues with 2.5.79.0.

If the installed version is below 2.6.1.0, an upgrade should be planned before the deadline. In most cases, this is a simple update that takes around five to ten minutes.

Why this check is useful even if the deadline does not apply

The September 2026 deadline is the immediate reason to check, but it is not the only reason to keep Microsoft Entra Connect Sync up to date.

Even where an organisation is already running a version that is not affected by the deadline, staying current helps ensure the service continues to operate correctly and benefits from Microsoft’s latest functionality and security updates.

That makes this a maintenance check for a service that supports everyday access across hybrid identity environments.

The recommended action is simple: confirm the version installed on the Entra Connect server, upgrade if the version is below Microsoft’s minimum requirement, and keep the service current as part of routine identity platform maintenance.
